Landscape as Cult A changing view
on our nature

Bureau Europa2019/2020
Curator: Saskia van SteinCo-curator: Remco BeckersGraphic identity: Nina van TuikwerdSpatial design: Saskia van Stein

Nature has always been the setting for our actions, just as our
actions have reciprocally influenced nature. Yet, humankind
has seemingly almost outgrown the natural world stage.
This exhibition puts the Romantic experience of nature
against the raw reality of cultivation. Landscape architecture is traditionally a historical analysis: a spatial design that strikes
the right balance between ecology, biodiversity and culture.
But what happens when instead of tackling the landscape
horizontally you construct it vertically, from archaeology to
satellite? What layers does it reveal and what meanings do we
find embedded in the nature around us?

The personal is political. Whether explicit or implicit, there is
an embedded political dimension to everything we do. The
exhibition aims to expand our ideas on political modes of
expression.

My Practice, My Politics portrays the way in which artists and
designers capture their views on society through the subject
matter they explore, the language and tools they employ, the
aesthetics they manifest, and the communities they engage.
Through a wide array of artistic practices, My Practice, My Politics conveys manifestations, interfaces and exchanges
between the individual and the societal.

In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, architects and
urban designers played an influential role in the fight against
dangerous pandemics and infectious diseases, such as chol-
era and tuberculosis. They contributed to a ‘hygiene wave’
through their architectural designs, used less poruis materials,
engineered water and sewage systems and designed in-
ner-city green spaces. Healthcare innovations and the spatial
translation thereof can be historically traced one-on-one.
What ‘intensive care’ challenges await us in the 21st century?
How will pandemics or prosperity diseases influence our cities?
Could we design for psychological social issues, such as
loneliness? How understand or prevent global inequalities in
access to healthcare? This exhibition examined the impact of
technological acceleration, architecture and design in relation
to prevention and selfcare in healthcare to (hacking) patents
and privatisation in the pharmaceutical industry.

The exhibition The Next Big Thing is Not a Thing relates the
evolving field of design to the science of anthropology. Using
the gaze as a metaphor, the exhibition questions the underly-
ing myths within design (and the about the designer), de-
constructs its emerging signs, and examines how technology
determines the future field of design.

The exhibition acknowledges the designer’s perspective as a
new fields of knowledge, critical aspect of any research and
design undertaking. The Next Big Thing is Not a Thing aims
to understand design as a human centered practice and ex-
pands its definition beyond a product-oriented practice as the
subject of a discipline in cultural development.

By delving deeper into the interior, the exhibition Domestic
Affairs tries to understand the paradox of precarious labour
conditions and modes of production in their social, economic
and political impact. The selected designers give meaning

to their work beyond the mere commodity. Their practices
should be understood as cultural signifiers of change: the in-
corporation of local materials and cultural narratives, a notion
of context that empowers communities, aided by collective
thinking and circular economies, co-production schemes or
the establishment of parameters for open source design tools.

Further blurring the boundaries of interiority, the exhibition
Domestic Affairs, the house is a home to the paradox. mani-

Common Carnaval was a project by, for, and with the citizens
of Maastricht, those born in the city as well as refugees and
newcomers. A project combining forces and deployed artistic,
design, and creative processes which introduce newcomers to
local traditions and rituals.

What opportunities lie herein for our community? Common
Carnaval received local and national attention* and raised questions about how we shape the notion of coexistence in our city.
With the arrival of refugees and newcomers in Dutch cities, the
meaning of the ‘co-’ in coexistence is more critical than ever.

*After an expression of support from Mayor Penn-te-Strake,a large number of public and private organisations contributed
to Common Carnaval, including iArts, Stichting Elisabeth
Strouven, Tout Maastricht, Code 043, iArts Maastricht Not Just A Number, Het Geluid Maastricht, Fashionclash COA, Bureau Europa, Zuyd Hogeschool, Gemeente Maastricht,
Provincie Limburg, Stichting Kanunnik Salden, de Tempeleers,
Vluchtelingenwerk, Jongerenraad Maastricht. Common Carnaval also worked with the designers Ebby Port,
Dear Hunter, Jonathan Vos Photography, Studio Noto and
FashionClash.

For this performative symposium, we wanted to discuss the
meaning of the term narrative in relation to our build heritage.

We embraced a variety of interdisciplinary conception of experiences, associations, lectures to question what con-
stitutes belonging. By bringing together young architects,
educators, thinkers, artists we wove different generations into
the discussions, performances and interventions. The audience was literately taken on a journey through the
derelict area of Belvedere, a former industrial site in Maastricht.

COMING SOON: Real Imaginary Futures was an exhibition
about this desire for an imaginary reality: an eclectic overview
of utopian efforts, stories, and practices through the history
of mankind. An extensive archive of illustrative examples,
particularly from Western cultural and visual history, provided
the basis for a genealogy of utopian images and ideas. In
addition, a cinematographic “DocUtopia” was developed
using (historical) references from literature and architectural
elements in film.

On the site of the former ceramics factories of the Royal
Sphinx, NAiM/Bureau Europa and several other cultural partners have programmed a temporary park called Sphinxpark.

This collaborative effort investigated the willingness for civic
engagement against the backdrop of 5 hectare of inner-city
vacant lot.
